The Center’s EMI Professional Development Program focuses on promoting teachers’ pedagogical knowledge and content-specific language skills. The program consists 3+1 levels, namely Entry I, Entry II, and Junior levels, which are completion-based, and a Senior level, which is performance-based.

Participants of Entry I, Entry II, and Junior levels are required to attend workshops, participate in teacher community activities, and complete teaching practice assignments. For each level, participants must participate 8 hours in workshops and 3 teacher community sessions totaling 6 hours, and complete the designated teaching practice assignment of that level (i.e. micro-teaching, classroom observation, and peer mentoring, respectively)

Participants in Entry I and Entry II levels should conduct a 15-minute micro-teaching session and a 50-minute classroom observation session, respectively. Both teaching practice assignments can be performed either online or in person. Micro-teaching and classroom observation require participants to demonstrate the EMI capabilities taught in Entry I and Entry II levels, and ensure that the demands of EMI language use and classroom procedures are met.

Participants of the Senior level are required to serve as EMI mentors and offer classroom observation services for their peers. The services consist observing their peers teach, providing initial oral feedback, and subsequently offering formal written feedback. To ensure the quality of the written feedback, the Center will include an expert in EMI classroom observations to check its content before it is handed to the observee.

Upon completing the first three levels of training, participants can progress to the Senior level of the Program, where their abilities to actually conduct EMI teaching will be examined. In this level, participants will be required to submit a portfolio detailing the planning, implementation, and assessment of their EMI courses for an EMI expert appointed by the Center to review. Additionally, the participants will undergo another classroom observation session and be reviewed more rigorously comparing to that of Entry II.

For the completion of each level, participants can acquire a certificate of completion (one-time issue) at the center’s website. For NSYSU faculty, an EMI certificate of completion is worth 1 point in the school’s faculty promotion evaluation process. Each certificate can only be counted once.
