The NSYSU Resource Center for Bilingual Education has offered the EMI Professional Development Program since 2021. Faculty members from universities across Taiwan are welcomed to join.

Structure
The EMI PD Program is 36 hours and 15 minutes in length, which includes 32 hours of [Professional Development Workshops], 15 minutes of [Microteaching], and 4 hours of [Classroom Observation].

PD Workshops
32 hours
Each [PD Workshop] lasts 2-3 hours. Workshop content includes lectures, discussions, and practice. Trainees should take 32 hours of workshops in total.
Classroom Observation

Faculty may apply to the Center [to be Observed] during the semester.

Faculty who have completed 22 hours of Professional Development Workshops and [To be Observed] may apply [to Observe].
Microteaching
15 minutes
Faculty may apply for [Microteaching], submit a 15-minute course recording and be reviewed for their language and teaching proficiency.
PD Workshops
PD Workshops are done in lectures, discussions, and practices. Each workshop is 2-3 hours in length. Teachers may enroll in the workshops they are interested in, and the participation record can be accumulated across semesters, so that teachers can take the program in their own way.

Microteaching & Classroom Observation
A mentor/EMI expert watches the applicant's microteaching video (15 minutes) and provides feedback. The procedures are as follows:

Materials Preparation:Lesson plan: Fill out "Lesson Plan for EMI Microteaching and Classroom Observation" using the template provided by the center. Accepted file formats: DOC, DOCX, or PDF. Demonstration video: Record a 15-minute demonstration video, which can be a segment from a self-recorded asynchronous course or a physical EMI course. Accepted file formats: MP4 or MOV. File size limit: 10 GB.

Online Application:Applicant fills out the application form and uploads the lesson plan and demonstration video.

Expert Review:Center invites a mentor/EMI expert to watch the demonstration video and complete the NSYSU EMI Classroom Observation Form.

Feedback:Applicant fills out and returns the feedback form to the Center after receiving mentor/expert feedback.

Record Entry:Once completed, "microteaching" record will be uploaded to our platform as proof of completing this requirement in the EMI Professional Development Program.
A mentor, expert, or pilot teacher (hereafter "observer") observes the applicant's 50-minute EMI course and provides feedback. The procedures are as follows:

Online Application:Applicant fills out the application form with class schedule.

Preparation:Center matches an observer. Applicant submits the lesson plan to the Center one week prior.
• Center provides the NSYSU EMI Classroom Observation Form to both parties. -
To be Observed:Observer conducts a 50-minute observation of the applicant's class.

Discussion:Applicant and observer discuss within one week post-observation.

Feedback:Observer completes the observation form. After receiving it, the applicant fills out and returns the feedback form to the Center.

Record Entry:Once completed, "To be Observed" record will be uploaded to our platform as proof of completing this requirement in the EMI Professional Development Program.
An applicant observes a peer's class (50 minutes/1 period/in-person) and provides feedback. The procedures are as follows:

Threshold:Applicant must complete at least 4 hours of observation-related PD workshops and the "To be Observed" component.

Online Application:Applicant fills out the application form to request an observation and provide availability for the current semester.

To Observe:Center assists in matching. The applicant conducts an observation of a peer's class (50 minutes/1 period) and completes the NSYSU EMI Classroom Observation Form.

Discussion:Applicant and the peer teacher hold a discussion within 1 week after the observation.

Expert Feedback:Center invites a mentor/expert to refine the observation form. The applicant then revises and provides the finalized form to the peer.

Record Entry:Once completed, "To Observe" record will be uploaded to our platform as proof of completing this requirement in the EMI Professional Development Program
Certificate of Completion
For completing each level of the PD Program, the center issues a Certificate of Completion. As the PD Program passed the MOE’s “Teaching Enhancement of EMI Course Accreditation”, completing the Program in full will also receive a certificate jointly issued by the MOE, TWAEA, and NSYSU.

How long does it take to complete the EMI PD Program?
1) The EMI PD Program is 36 hours and 15 minutes in length.
2) The Center opens approximately 32 hours of PD workshops per semester, and teachers may apply as they see fit. Classroom Observation and Microteaching services are provided upon individual application.

Does the Center provide a participation record for each training event?
The Center does not provide participation records for independent events, but teachers may download an Attendance record that documents all participation records. The Attendance record can be downloaded at the Center’s website>Login>Training Record>Current Structure(登入>培訓記錄>新制).
